This brochure promotes intelligent vehicle highway systems (IVHS), describing them as advanced technology for safer, easier travel. Illustrations include the Washington State Department of Transportation's traffic management center, the TravTek test in Orlando, Florida, the ADVANCE project in Chicago, Illinois, an automated system for collecting bus fares in Delaware, Idaho's Storm Warning System, Colorado's system to inform truck drivers of safe operating speeds on long downgrades, and the Minnesota Department of Transportation's provision of travel information through computer networks or cable television. A list of the technologies and services being developed under IVHS is provided, and the implementation of IVHS technology through public/private partnerships is discussed, including the roles of the federal government, the private sector, state and local governments, universities, and consumer and industry groups. The brochure concludes with a statement on the implications of IVHS for economic growth and competitiveness in the United States. |
