The idea for a Trans-Atlantic workshop on System Architecture for Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) was born at the Second World Congress on Intelligent Transport Systems, which was held in Yokohama in November 1995. Discussions with those closely involved with the US DOT National ITS Architecture project showed that the Technical Review Team had produced research results which would have a wider significance than for the USA alone. Whereas the American approach can be characterised as top-down, in Europe the approach has been bottom-up and is evolving through the deployment of Advanced Transport Telematics projects supported by the European Commission. Thus, the workshop provided the opportunity for ideas and thoughts to be exchanged between those working on the USA architecture and members of nine countries involved in the European programmes. The issues addressed in the workshop included: an overview of the North American and European perspectives on ITS architecture and standards, together with reports from the various syndicator groups which discussed the following topics: the necessity for national system architecture; benefits, synergy and risks of ITS; ITS and the vehicle; integrating of Traffic Management and Information Centres; international standards development priorities; the need for ITS architecture; what ITS architecture offers the private, and the public sectors. |
