In May of 1993, the Arkansas Archeological Survey (AAS) entered into a cooperative agreement with the Department of Arkansas Heritage (DAH) to develop a computer-based geographic information system (GIS) map layer and an associated digital database containing extensive information on all archeological surveys and excavations within the State of Arkansas. Currently, the resulting integrated digital system as developed by AAS will allow state and federal agencies to remotely access and query the AAS computer system via telecommunications networks and Internet for information on more than 29,000 archeological sites and more than 3,100 archeological survey projects, as well as a variety of GIS environmental map data. The integrated system developed by means of this grant provides powerful mapping and analytical tools that a number of agencies and organizations have long needed in order to enhance resource management, planning, and research activities within the State of Arkansas. |
