This paper presents a videoimage-based vehicle-detection/classification methodology that is of importance to intelligent vehicle-highway system (IVHS) deployment. This technology constitutes the front-end sensing mechanism of a smart diamond interchange controller currently being developed at the Texas A&M IVHS Research Center. It is anticipated that videoimage sensing will augment, perhaps replace, inductive loops in traffic-control systems. Inductive loops require installation in the pavement, which is disruptive to traffic and requires on-going maintenance. Use of videoimaging in place of inductive loops as a front-end sensor offers the potential to overcome these difficulties. The methodology herein employs intensity variations of scan lines taken along lanes. Such an approach allows an image to be processed in less than one second on a PC-486 platform. |
