Due to the complexity of traffic movements occurring within urban interchanges and increasing levels of demand, many diamond interchanges are experiencing serious congestion. Unfortunately, today's industry-standard control hardware and intersection timing practices do not always allow for optimum performance. In response to this need for improved, condition-responsive traffic control, the "Smart" diamond project has been underway at the Texas A&M ITS Research Center of Excellence. The Smart project uses video imaging equipment to provide input to a VMEbus unit containing processor, memory, and input/output cards. The VMEbus stores and analyzes the traffic descriptive data and produces optimal settings for a diamond interchange controller and for lane assignment signs that control the use of space within the interchange. |
