This paper presents a study to quantify pedestrian parameters along a busy crosswalk by using a commercial videoimage processing system. Such quantification can be used to improve traffic signal timing and operations of heavily crossed street intersections. A surveillance system is developed based on a wireless communication link between a videocamera installed at a pedestrian crossing and a monitoring lab. Pedestrian flow parameters are computed in real time. The performance of the commercial monitoring device is assessed by comparing the results to manual inspection. |
