Numerous metropolitan areas throughout the United States have implemented or are in the process of developing Advanced Transportation Management Systems (ATMS). The intent of these systems is to maximize the productivity and efficiency of the surface transportation system through better management of the existing infrastructure and to enhance safety, mobility, accessibility, and the environment. Public transit services can benefit from ATMS in a number of ways. In addition, transit systems can provide valuable information to ATMS. Using Houston as a case study, this paper explores approaches to better integrate transit with ATMS, examines the benefits to all groups from this enhanced integration, and discusses the use of the information generated by ATMS to enhance transit planning and operations.
