This booklet was prepared by the Light Rail Transit Committee of the Transportation Research Board and first distributed at the Eighth Joint Conference on Light Rail Transit in Dallas, Texas, in November 2000 on the conference proceedings CD-ROM. The booklet discusses the definition of light rail transit (LRT), the origin of LRT, and North American LRT as we know it today. Also discussed are LRT infrastructure, rolling stock, and fixed equipment, followed by an examination of LRT operating experience in North America. Concluding comments concern the future of LRT, which appears to be one of continuing expansion in North America. Of 23 systems now in operation, 15 are actively extending or upgrading their lines. There are currently 8 future new systems in various stages of planning or design. |
