This workshop resource paper begins by describing recent developments in stated preference (SP) methods for forecasting travel behavior. While many applications of SP now use interactive techniques, especially "adaptive" designs that customize presented alternatives according to a respondent's circumstances and initial choices, there are reasons for the emergence of fundamentally interactive methods that are geared toward understanding individual choice processes. The paper continues with an attempt to describe a general conceptual framework (the "behavioral response choice set") as an initial formalization of these processes. The paper then covers the wider spectrum of "interactive stated response" (ISR) survey methods, many of which aim to observe the processes of choice, and goes on to emphasize the need to establish precise survey protocols. It concludes with a number of questions concerning the recent development of these approaches, attempting to understand how experimental approaches from the disciplines of economics and psychology could extend and improve the accuracy of ISR survey methods. |
