On February 22, 2000, in Stafford, Virginia, cold temperatures and a sudden snowstorm created white-out conditions that took motorists and state transportation officials by surprise. The scene was set for what would become Virginia's worst crash ever; a 117-vehicle pile-up that caused 1 death and 31 injuries. The resulting accident scene occurred on the busy Interstate 95 north-south corridor and jammed traffic throughout Northern Virginia. This article focuses on the large-scale, cooperative effort by Virginia State police, fire and rescue, and Department of Transportation (VDOT) personnel who facilitated clearing the crash scene and reopening the highway within 12 hours. |
