While carpooling nationwide has declined, Dallas' HOV lanes are getting more drivers to become riders in significant numbers. In addition, overall vehicle occupancy on the freeways is rising. Added benefits include: more than doubling bus operating speeds, cutting costs and saving travel time; and an increase in total person movement. Benefit-cost ratios suggest they pay for themselves in 5 years. As time goes on, researchers expect to have enough data to see if the expected increased safety materializes. |
