Throughout the world, commercial fishing is recognized as one of the most dangerous of all industrial occupations. The U.K. is no exception, and its commercial fishing industry tends to be very fragmented with many fishermen operating as skipper-owners. Most organizations engaged in the process of catching fish do so with out any formal management structure. Because the U.K. is now part of the European Union, its waters are being even more heavily fished and conservation measures have been introduced. Against this backdrop, safety in the industry is not considered good. This article describes efforts by the U.K.'s Marine Accident Investigation Branch, which is responsible for collecting data on marine accidents and for investigating their causes, to recommend measures to improve commercial fishing safety in the U.K. |
