This black and white picture album covers well-travelled ground, London Transport's Country Area buses and Green Line coaches in the two decades before they were transferred to the National Bus Company's new London Country subsidiary in 1970. However, it views them through the work of Peter Mitchell, who took up serious photography in 1949 to indulge his passion for buses, railways and windmills. Trains and railway infrastructure feature in some of the pictures and two windmills stand majestically behind a Mann Egerton-bodied AEC Regal HI at Outwood Common roughly halfway between Crawley and Godstone. Mitchell, who died in 2011, had a talent for photographic composition and many of those selected here - printed one or two to a page - show the landscapes and streetscapes of the areas the buses served. Laurie Akehurst has drawn on his own and other experts' knowledge to describe the vehicles and routes, which are presented in a clockwise survey from Gravesend to Windsor and High Wycombe of routes numbered in the 400s and 850s. A second volume is promised for the area to the north. |
