摘要: Until the end of the 1960s, the bus scene in Luton was a unique mix of municipal, state-owned company and London Transport. Luton Corporation's red fleet and the green one of United Counties operated at a northern extremity of the huge area in which London Transport enjoyed a virtual monopoly; some of LT's green Country Area buses and Green Line coaches used a garage in the Bedfordshire town. The corporation had taken over operation of Luton's electric tramway - the only one in Bedfordshire - in 1923, nearly closed it in 1930 but instead replaced the trams with motorbuses in 1932 and expanded their coverage. The close shave in 1930 had come when Eastern National - whose Midland Area was transferred to United Counties in May 1952 - offered to replace the trams with its own buses. The Ministry of Transport vetoed that and in 1949 the rivals entered into a joint operation agreement that lasted until the corporation, faced with mounting losses, sold out to United Counties from January 4, 1970. That was three days after London Transport's Country Area passed to the National Bus Company (NBC) as London Country Bus Services, which reduced several services and closed its Luton garage in 1977.
