The original Nagasaki Fishing Port was located in the centre of Nagasaki City, in the depth of the bay of Nagasaki that is a good port naturally. To replace it, the New Nagasaki Fishing Port was built on reclaimed land in the Mie District, some 15 kilometres northwest of the old fishing port. The construction of the New Nagasaki Fishing Port was started in 1973, and it was opened 17 years later after a total investment of 130 billion yen. Before the new fishing port was built, the Mie District of Nagasaki City was a hamlet with a population of only a few hundred, engaged equally in agriculture and fishing. The New Nagasaki Fishing Port is now used by 1,264 fishing boats, landing 80,000 tons of fish catches every year (the 7th highest in Japan), making this one of the leading fishery cities in Japan. A 7-kilometre port access road has been built to link the New Nagasaki Fishing Port with the Express Highway. The creation of housing land behind the fishing port is also in progress, and the population of the district has grown from a few hundred before the construction of the new fishing port to 17,000 today. The Nagasaki Prefecture Fisheries Testing Station, the Marine Resources Education and Research Centre of Nagasaki University Fisheries Department have been built in the New Nagasaki Fishing Port. This paper gives an introduction to the New Nagasaki Fishing Port, which, as outlined above, is one of Japan’s largest fishing ports (combining “an integrated fishing port from landing to processing and distribution”, “an urban fishing port”, and “an international fishing port”) and is making a major contribution to regional development. |
