The first smart bus stop in Taipei has been implemented by using Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) technology. There were more than 200 microwave tags installed on buses operating on the Chong-Qing (CQ) bus lane for the trial. Consequently, bus location could be identified at the CQ bus stop by using microwave tag readers. The location data, as well as the traffic signal data, were used to estimate bus travel time. The results showed that bus travel time was related to the cycle length and the arriving point during a signal cycle. The AVL can be widely installed at major Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) stations and at bus transfer points to increase level of service of the public transit system that attracts more transit riders to the system. |
