This paper introduces the research of the first Chinese Dynamic Route Guidance System: UTFGS developed by Jilin University of Technology. The data fusion method based on urban traffic flow characteristics of China is studied in order to convert detector data to real-time link travel times. A synthetic knowledge-based travel time prediction model is developed in order to select the best forecasting model according to different traffic conditions. The route planning method used by UTFGS is a kind of hierarchical search method based on actual travelling characteristics. The preliminary field testing of UTFGS has begun with the aim of verifying the fitness of theoretical models and evaluating whether DRGS is an effective method for traffic flow guidance.
