摘要: INCREASING THE CAPACITY OF THE ROAD NETWORK IS A PARTICULAR CONCERN OF THE ROAD AUTHORITIES. HOWEVER, IN THE OLD URBAN AREAS IT IS USUALLY NOT POSSIBLE TO ACHIEVE AN INCREASE IN CAPACITY THROUGH THE CONSTRUCTION OF NEW TRAFFIC AREAS; RATHER AN ATTEMPT MUST BE MADE TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM OF CONSTANTLY INCREASING TRAFFIC VOLUMES BY MAKING THE MOST OF LOCAL FEATURES. IN THIS RESEARCH PROJECT A STUDY IS TO BE MADE OF THE EXTENT TO WHICH A DECREASE CAN BE MADE IN THE WIDTH OF INDIVIDUAL TRAFFIC LANES AT SIGNAL-CONTROLLED JUNCTIONS WITHOUT A SUBSTANTIAL REDUCTION IN SAFETY TAKING PLACE. MOREOVER A STUDY IS TO BE MADE OF THE EFFECTS OF INCREASING THE CAPACITY, OF JUNCTIONS TOGETHER WITH PROPOSALS FOR THE OPTIMUM UTILIZATION OF THE AVAILABLE TRAFFIC SPACE.
