This paper focuses on a sensor concept and a video sensor modules for truck coupling. The truck coupling system automatically controls the following truck on the trajectory of its predecessor keeping a short headway. The major sensor system components include a communication system transmitting information about the driving status of the leading truck and a video sensor module directly estimating the headway and orientation of the leading trailer. It employs a robust tracking approach of a visual pattern affixed to the leading trailer in order to enhance system reliability. A self-assessment procedure for the video sensor module is proposed. The sensor has been successfully integrated into a coupling system for heavy trucks. Experimental results are reported in open and closed control loop demonstrating the accuracy and reliability of the video sensor module. |
