City of Toronto Transportation and the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) conducted a bus priority demonstration project, funded by the Province of Ontario. This technical paper outlines the demonstration project, describes the transit priority system technology employed, and summarizes the before/after evaluation results. The paper points out how ITS technology is not only applicable to large traffic signal control systems, like Toronto’s, but is also scaleable to suit smaller city operations as well. The findings of the project have shown that the implementation of bus transit priority capability at signalized intersections has the potential to significantly reduce capital and operating costs and reduce the running times of buses. Other vehicular traffic travelling along bus routes equipped with bus transit priority operation can also expect reductions in signal delay and travel time. Acceptable levels of impact to mixed traffic on the crossroads can be expected, and vary by intersection type, while impacts to pedestrians can be expected, but are minimal. |
