Albuquerque is home to a major reconstruction of the "Big I" interchange between interstates I-25 and I-40. The project includes 55 new or renovated bridges that will transform the Big I from three levels into a five-level maze of overlapping ramps and roadways. Using the Internet and wireless communications, the New Mexico State Highway and Transportation Department has deployed an entire intelligent transportation system in the work zone, including detection systems, a variety of dynamic message signs, and smart work zones. As the Albuquerque example shows, combining flexible communication systems with an Internet-based TOC software network can offer the benefits of ITS in work zones for improved safety and efficiency. |
