The purpose of this paper is to present the evaluation results for the before and after deployment scenarios of the Orion Transit Itinerary Planner System (TIPS). TIPS is an automated transit itinerary planning service that provides detailed, personalized transit trip plans and other transit-related information for the Twin Cities metropolitan area in Minnesota. It was developed for operation by Metro Transit's Transit Information Center (TIC) and became operational in December 1999. The service operates through a telephone interface with representatives at the TIC. For the before evaluation, the trip planner system was a manual process, taking anywhere from 15 seconds to 30 minutes to locate the caller's start and end points, and then find the appropriate bus schedule and route. The new automated, computerized mapping system evaluates the optimum route based upon minimizing total travel time, walking time or distance, fare, number of transfers, and special needs (disabilities bicycle facilities, etc.). The information can then be disseminated over the phone or can be faxed, e-mailed, or mailed with supporting maps and schedules. |
