摘要: Traffic management systems continuously collect volumes of traffic data such as mean speed, volume, and occupancy. Historically these data have seen little use outside of the systems; however, many systems now archive these data. An analysis of the archived data can produce beneficial information for many stakeholders in transportation beyond the traffic management center. By identifying these potential users and their uses of traffic information and employing a thorough analysis procedure, typical traffic profiles can be generated that provide information on traffic patterns by time and place. Analyses of the impact of special events such as incidents and seasonal patterns can provide additional insight into the performance of the transportation system. Traffic profiles can clearly show the differences between special circumstances and typical patterns. Such an analysis was undertaken of archived data from the Hampton Roads Smart Traffic Center, a freeway management system in southeastern Virginia. An understanding of traffic patterns and variance among selected locations from across the region as well as the impacts of holiday weekends and incidents was gained from this effort.
