摘要: This paper describes the largest Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) project in the world to date--over 700 lanes on over 300 miles of very heavily traveled roadway in New Jersey--the vehicle classification requirements for this project, a description of the proposed new Automatic Vehicle Classification (AVC) system based on Doppler radar and light curtains, how the AVC was implemented and tested, and some conclusions as to its widespread applicability. With the move to use Automatic Vehicle Identification (AVI) technology for ETC, the need for an AVC was created to ensure the proper collection of toll fares. No AVC system had ever been built to meet the vehicle classification requirements for this project. Early on in the design process it was determined that technologies employed on previous AVC projects were not going to meet the requirements of this project on a consistent reliable basis. This led to a request for proposal for a new AVC system.
