Although highway agencies are attempting to plan and develop highway infrastructure projects utilizing the procedural provisions of the 1991 Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act and the Transportation Efficiency Act for the 21 Century, for the most part these efforts have excluded interagency coordination and modal integration of traveler information systems. Transportation authorities are planning and designing a multi modal highway network that takes into account highway infrastructure, mass transit, light/ heavy rail, truck distribution centers, and air/rail/sea port locations. At the same time, these authorities are developing model domain dependent and isolated real/current time data collection, transportation management, and traveler information distribution networks. Clearly the infrastructure supports a traveler taking a personal car to a bus depot, transferring onto a light rail and arriving at the airport on time. Yet, the traveler has no means of reviewing any relevant information except at each mode and for each mode independently as interagency coordination is limited or non existent. This paper will review the multi-modal infrastructure and traveler information system and present an integrated communication interface schematic for a multi-intermodal transportation infrastructure. |
