Minnesota Guidestar is Minnesota’s statewide Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) program. Over the past seven (7) years Guidestar has initiated, managed, partnered, and/or sponsored over sixty (60) ITS operational test projects. Today, Guidestar is considered a leader in the development of ITS projects throughout the country. Smart Workzone (SWZ) began in the spring of 1995 and concluded in the fall of 1996. It was a Guidestar operational test project that grew out of an earlier Guidestar operational test, the Portable Traffic Management System (PTMS). The PTMS was developed in response to periodic traffic congestion problems resulting from major events. It could easily be moved and adapted to event locations and thus, served to improve traffic conditions. Such a system would also serve construction sites by providing realtime, site specific traffic information. This was accomplished through the use of non-intrusive detection devices and wireless communication. At the foundation of SWZ was a partnership which involved both public and private partners. The SWZ project produced benefits to both the public and private parties involved. |
