The United States Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), in coordination with a number of partners from the private sector, has developed Demonstration Project 105 (DP 105), titled AAdvanced Transportation Management Technologies@, as a unique and very effective way to promote the deployment of integrated intelligent transportation systems (ITS). DP 105 is a mobile showcase, see Figures 1 and 2 which contains operational versions of software systems and hardware that are used in the surveillance and control of traffic on both freeways and surface streets. All the technologies are housed in or on an expandable tractor-trailer that can be taken to any location and used for executive summaries, structured walkthroughs, and/or workshops. This paper explains why DP 105 was developed, how it is designed, what it contains, how it is employed, and why it is proving to be so successful at fostering a better understanding of advanced transportation management technologies in the United States. |
