摘要: The paper describes the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority's (the Authority) current planning and deployment challenges while preparing to deploy a state-of-the-art Electronic Toll Collection system (known locally as I-PASS 2000). Most of the system is to be in place by late 1998. The paper focuses on describing various deployment strategies. The Authority's system consist of 274 miles of user-funded expressways serving northern Illinois, principally in the Chicago metropolitan area. There are 21 manned mainline plazas, 26 manned ramp plazas, and 46 unmanned ramp plazas on the existing system. Many of the toll plazas are nearing the end of their design life. In the early 1990's the first generation of the I-PASS system was installed on portions of the Authority's system. Several of these existing installations allow for electronic toll collection at roll-through speeds (15 M.P.H. for safety reasons). The Authority is now in the initial phase of installing I-PASS 2000 equipment in all manned and most automatic (unmanned) plaza lanes in the Chicago metropolitan area. This initial phase is planned for completion in autumn of 1998. Eventually, I-PASS will be installed throughout the system.
