摘要: The objective of this paper is to investigate the impacts of traffic engineering (TE) requirements and systems engineering (SE) requirements of ITS projects on ITS telecommunication. The study is based on survey of five ITS sites in MA, MD, MN, OH, and TX, conducted by the Volpe National Transportation Systems Center while the author was working for the center. ITS deals with traffic-related problems using not only TE approaches, but also many SE approaches, such as using integrated computer and telecommunication networks for central control, information gathering and dissemination, and incident management. These technical options have greatly improved the effectiveness of transportation systems. Due to the characteristics of ITS, both TE and SE requirements are of importance in ITS deployment and operation.
