A demonstration project to evaluate the technical feasibility and potential cost effectiveness of using infrared camera technology to provide enhanced visibility for traffic management purposes during hours of darkness was conducted by the California Department of Transportation along the Santa Monica Freeway (Interstate Route 10) in West Los Angeles. Two types of cameras were deployed for evaluation: an infrared (IR) camera and a near infrared (NIR) camera. The project provided for the informal qualitative evaluation by personnel from the Los Angeles area Transportation Management Center (TMC) of each camera type and a comparison against video images relayed over an existing color closed circuit television system monitoring the busy Santa Monica Freeway corridor. Though such leading edge new technology is constantly evolving with each successive generation of equipment, the general assessment is that infrared camera technology can be utilized in the traffic management application. However, as a practical matter its deployment, at least on a large scale, would be cost prohibitive. |
