A major investment has been made in developing an ITS National Architecture for the United States to provide a framework to achieve consistency and compatibility across the country. Also, the National Architecture is thought to save implementors millions of dollars by allowing for reusable systems and providing a larger market for product vendors to encourage product developments. This paper addresses how an analysis was performed to compare a major Automated Traveler Information System (ATIS), Partners In Motion in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area, with the guidelines provided by the ITS National Architecture. Partners In Motion is a PUB Published by: lic-private partnership comprised of 37 agencies and businesses who are working together to develop a comprehensive Traveler Information System.. The project is being contracted through the Virginia DOT and represents Maryland, the District of Columbia, and Virginia. This new traveler information network will eventually provide on-demand, real- time, and route specific information on all modes of travel (i.e. highway, bus, rail and air) in the metropolitan Washington D.C. area using several different data dissemination technologies. This paper addresses a process used to evaluate how the Partners In Motion project maps into the design concepts defined by the National ITS Architecture. |
