With the call again by the Ministry of Construction as in last year automakers and infrastructure manufacturers on the road side converged again, putting the AHS (Automated Highway System) to test for approximately one month starting in September 1996 on Joshinetsu Highway in Komoro City, Nagano. Honda participated in the project together again this time with Sumitomo Electric Industries, Inc. The course used this time covered around trip portion of approximately 5.5 km of the highway before it opened to PUB Published by: lic. Similar to last year, each vehicle position was orientated by detecting magnetic fields of magnetic nails that are buried in the road surface. The system works by acquiring such information as driving speed commands, preceding traffic and road conditions, etc. transmitting them via road-to-vehicle communications through LCXS (Leakage Coaxial Cables). Having conducted this on-road experiment this year of the Automated Highway System, we were able to confirm the validity of an inertial navigation system that keeps lanes of 350-400 m without having to detect magnetic nails that function as lane markers. |
