Many areas are improving, constructing, studying or contemplating Regional or Corridor Traffic Management Systems. Regardless of scope or location, travel data must be collected, converted to travel information and used to operate the system. Little thought, if any, is being given to the value of this information in the market place. Those responsible for implementing the ARTIMIS Regional Traffic Management System in the Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky area gave absolutely no thought to the possibility of this information having value until well into the design of ARTIMIS. ARTIMIS stands for Advanced Regional Traffic Interactive Management & Information System. Infrastructure being installed includes a modest, yet functional 13,000 square foot Control Center Building, 40 overhead and 3 Portable Changeable Message Signs, two Highway Advisory Radio stations, 60 CCTV cameras, 54 miles of fiber optic cable, five Freeway Service Patrol vehicles, 1,100 detectors (inductive loop, wide beam radar and video) and experimental blue reference markers. Public partners in ARTIMIS are the Ohio Department of Transportation, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC), the Federal Highway Administration, the OKI Regional Council of Governments and the city of Cincinnati. The System Manager is TRW Inc., of Fairborn, Ohio. TRW's subconsultants include SmartRoute Systems of Cambridge, Massachusetts. The KYTC is the lead state agency. All activities are guided by two committees, Policy and Technical, which include representatives of the public partners. However, each agency retains its statutory role and responsibilities. |
