The Passive Multipath Traffic Sensor is an entirely new type of sensor that is capable of measuring traffic speed and volume in all weather conditions and at a low installed cost. The sensor makes use of multipath interference from ambient radio frequency (RF) signals. Variations in the multipath interference allow the sensor to determine traffic speed and volume. Tests from a prototype sensor have shown the ability to measure traffic volume with an accuracy of better than 90% and speed with an accuracy of better than +/-5mph. The hardware for the sensor is fairly simple and will result in a low unit cost. The sensor can be installed on the side of the road and can operate on solar/battery power resulting in a low installation cost. The main application for the sensor is wide area traffic monitoring where inexpensive traffic sensors are needed. This paper describes the multipath phenomenon used by the sensor, the main elements of the sensor, the detection algorithms used by the sensor for measuring traffic speed and volume, and some experimental data from a prototype sensor. |
