Vehicles are being equipped not only with information functions related to the car, but to an increasing degree also with applications involving entertainment, route guidance, telecommunication and traffic control technology. Related display and control functions can be advantageously integrated in a central module located in the dashboard which is linked up to the individual components. The requirements placed on a flexible and cost-efficient communication architecture will be discussed, among others, on the basis of the data rates to be communicated for control functions, audio and TV/video. The latter aspect will be dealt with under consideration of the evolutionary transition from analogue to digital technology and with regard to data compression and synchronous transmission of picture and sound. A global communication architecture for control data in vehicles has always been a subject of fundamental importance in the automobile industry where the relevant processes have to be elaborated and standardized. On the other hand, the audio and TV/video standards are set in the PC, TV and consumer industry where complex semiconductor circuits are marketed in high volumes. Here, it is necessary to select and - if inevitable - to adapt suitable solutions for vehicles. |
