Consumer attitudes toward the automated highway system were investigated. Six focus group meetings were held in three separate San Francisco Bay Area subregions with the groups segregated by age and income. A majority of the participants had a favorable reaction to the AHS despite the fact that almost all of them were concerned about its safety and funding capability. Attitudes toward the AHS varied with age and driving experience. The older people were more enthusiastic about the technology than were the younger people. Comparing it to the collision avoidance system, the focus group members recognized the safety benefits, the convenience, and especially the stress reduction gained by using the automated highway system. The concerns were primarily with the system's reliability during an emergency, for instance when the system breaks down or if there is an earthquake. Considering that many participants were skeptical of computer technology, a demonstration of risk free automated facilities may help consumers obtain sufficient product knowledge to realistically evaluate the automated highway system. |
