The I-95 Corridor Coalition is a partnership of the major public and private transportation agencies from Virginia to Maine. The overall goal of the Coalition is to enhance mobility, safety, and efficiency across all modes and transportation facilities that serve the Corridor. Achieving this goal requires information sharing between the Coalition members and with the traveling public. The I-95 Corridor Coalition has sponsored several projects in response to this need, including the development and deployment of an Information Exchange Network. The objective of the IEN is to facilitate communications and information sharing among Coalition member agencies and with private entities. This shared information supports coordinated transportation management and traveler information on a regional and corridor-wide basis. The Information Exchange Network provides the points of entry and access to transportation agency databases, and also functions as the communications backbone for exchanging the interagency information. This paper provides an overview of the Information Exchange Network. It discusses the various IEN applications - such as incident tracking, construction activities, VMS/HAR, traffic/transit link conditions, and historical data - which support numerous Corridor-wide functions. The paper also describes the IEN architect and components, including workstations, user interface, servers, communications network, and Data Interfaces (DI); the purpose of the DI being to connect and extract information from an agency's ITS-based system, process and convert the data to the appropriate format, and transmit to a server for subsequent aggregation and distribution to IEN workstations throughout the corridor. |
