The purpose of this field evaluation was to monitor the installation procedures and field performance of an ultrathin, open graded, hot mixed asphalt friction course placed over a heavy application of polymer-modified asphalt emulsion, known by the trade name 'NOVACHIP(R)'. NOVACHIP is being considered as an alternative, preventive highway maintenance option for bituminous and concrete pavement treatments in Pennsylvania. Five project sites were constructed in Pennsylvania for the purpose of this evaluation. Three projects were monitored at regular intervals over a five-year period. One project was monitored over a three-year time frame. The final project was eliminated from the evaluation due to reconstruction of the section for a new interchange. The evaluation included a visual performance for raveling, weathering, delamination, in addition to skid resistance testing, surface macrotexture depth testing, surface roughness (IRI), and transportation related noise measurements. The five-year evaluation demonstrated the system's ability to perform as designed and provides a rapid, cost effective alternative to resurfacing. |
