The purpose of this field evaluation was to monitor the installation procedures and field performance of an ultrathin, open graded, hot mixed asphalt friction course placed over a heavy application of polymer-modified asphalt emulsion, known by the trade name “NOVACHIP®". The material is laid using specially built equipment, which spreads both the asphalt emulsion and hot mix asphalt in a single pass. The material is placed at an average thickness of 3/8” to 3/4” (10 mm to 20 mm).
Four projects were monitored at tegular intervals over a five-year period. The evaluation included a visual performance for raveling, weathering, delamination, in addition to skid resistence testing, surface macrotexture depth testing, surface roughness (IRI), and transportation related noise measurements.
NOVACHIP provided excellent surface leveling and profiling over the existing surface. The existing surface irregularities and minor rutting were easily restored to a smooth surface both transverely and longitudinally. The average skid resistence on all three prefects has remained well above acceptable levels.
Overall performance results of NOVACHIP were excellent. Based on this study, NOVACHIP can be considered as an ahemate maintenance option for preventive maintenance and surface rehabilitation, especially on roads whichc have high average daily traffic.
