Filtration has been identified as the most important barrier for the removal of particles and microorganisms in drinking water treatment. The objective was to address the public demand for higher quality at lower costs and improved safeguards by optimizing the performance of treatment plant filters. The City wanted to replace wasteful manual operation by improving instrumentation and controls. The City of Canadaigua installed and tested an automatic system for determining optimum time for backwash duration. They installed and tested a turbidimeter, particle counter, and automatic SCADA system to control and optimize the system. The system cost $47,700 and will result in a 35% reduction in the amount of clean water used to backwash the filters. This will save 31,000kWh of electricity and $7,200 per year in energy and chemical costs. Installation of the controls precluded the City from spending capital to increase the water treatment plant's capacity. |
