Objectives: To determine whether using ozone in the water-treatment process can improve finished water quality by
controlling zebra mussels, cryptosporidium, and natural organic matter, which lead to formation of disinfection by-products
and poor taste and odor.
R&D Results: Ozone has many potential advantages over chlorine, including disinfection of Cryptosporidium, control of
disinfection byproducts, particle (turbidity) removal, and taste and odor control. Data to quantify these benefits was collected
using a pilot plant that simulated the full-scale Dunkirk water treatment plant (WTP). The pilot plant was operated under
varying ozone dosages (in terms of CT), ozone application point (raw water vs. filtered water), coagulant dosage, and filter
type [silica sand vs. granular activated carbon (GAC)].
