Noise barriers have been built in the USA since the early fifties when vehicular traffic burgeoned. By the 1990s, noise barriers with transparent materials commenced in the West European countries. India made a late entry in this field till there was a significant increase in automobile transport both on Urban roads and other highways. Although highway development programme led to economic boom and increase in purchasing power of people along the roads, its bi-product has been increase in noise and air pollution which is considered as unavoidable for development. As urbanization proceeds, increasing numbers of people are getting more exposed to noise pollution. Exposure to noise during night time causes sleep disturbance which has a multiple negative effects on health. Continuous exposure to noise pollution has also been linked to hormonal disturbances, diabetes, deafness, hyper-tension, cardiovascular problems and mental illness. Therefore, it is necessary to reduce the intensity of noise to acceptable limit by constructing noise barriers on Flyovers/ROBs and in selected stretches of Highway corridors where there is sizeable habitation. Traffic noise levels are affected by distance, terrain, vegetation, natural and manmade obstacles. |
