THE USE OF HEAT INSULATING COURSES IN ROADS |

DIMENSIONS OF THE INSULATING COURSE IN RELATION TO TYPE OF MATERIAL, DURATION OF FROST, SHARPNESS OF THE FROST AND DEPTH OF INCORPORATION ARE TO BE EXAMINED IN PERMAFROST AND FATIGUE TESTS ON A LARGE TEST RIG. IN PARALLEL, MEASUREMENTS OF TEMPERATURE AND MECHANICAL TESTS ARE TO BE UNDERTAKEN ON EXPERIMENTAL ROADS. THE LATTER SHOULD ALSO ENABLE BEHAVIOUR OF THE INSULATING COURSES TO BE DETERMINED AFTER LONG-TERM LAYING IN MOIST SOIL. THE STUDIES COMPRISE: (1) TESTING OF HEAT-INSULATING MATERIAL FOR ITS ROAD ENGINEERING AND THERMODYNAMIC PROPERTIES; (2) THE EFFECTS OF INCORPORATION ON THE HEAT REGIME AND THE BEARING PROPERTIES OF THE ROAD; (3) SPECIFICATION OF THE INSULATING COURSE THICKNESSES; (4) OBSERVATION OF EXPERIMENTAL ROADS AND INSULATING COURSES UNDER TRAFFIC; (5) EXECUTION OF FATIGUE TESTS WITH BAST IMPULSE SENSORS TO CHECK FATIGUE PROPERTIES UNDER SIMULATED HEAVY LOADING.
