As communities that neighbor military installations expand and approach installation boundaries, installations are increasingly asked to alter activities within their boundaries to alleviate conflicts. One approach to the problem is to track historical urban growth in areas surrounding military installations so that military and civilian planners can anticipate and devise appropriate strategies to deal with potential conflicts. One approach is the 'nstallation-specific historic urban growth series'developed by the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (ERDC/CERL). This visual presentation quickly conveys the potential for conflicts as the separation between military lands and the neighboring community diminishes. This work investigated issues relevant to this documentation process and developed and tested the process by designing case studies for four military installations. |
