A critical problem facing the highway industry and transportation authorities is how to develop and screen more durable, cost-effective and long-life repair materials. Failure of repairs to highway pavements and bridge decks is frequently due to the deterioration of bond between the old concrete and the new repair materials. There are currently no standard test methods for evaluating the effects of deicing salts and freeze-thaw cycling on the durability of bond between two layers of concrete. Two durability test techniques have been developed in this study. These techniques combine bond evaluation with deicer salt and scaling application or with freeze-thaw cycling. The tests can also be used to assess how the bond performance by the initial moisture condition or the surface preparation of the old concrete, curing time, or other conditions of the repair process influence. The developed test methods were used to investigate four rapid setting repair materials' relative performance were compared. Proposed requirements for temporary and permanent repair materials for pavements and bridge decks are also presented. |
