(1) TO MEASURE THE MOISTURE CONTENT AND PORE WATER PRESSURES IN A LABORATORY TWO-DIMENSIONAL MODEL AND IN REAL ROADS WITH A VIEW TO TESTING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF A VERTICAL CAPILLARY SAND BARRIER AS A MEANS OF PROTECTING THE SUBGRADE AGAINST THE EDGE EFFECT. (2) TO INVESTIGATE THE APTITUDE OF VARIOUS SUBSTANCES (SILICONE RESINS, AMINE ACETATES, ETC.) ;OR WATERPROOFING SILTY SOIL WITH A VIEW TO OBTAINING PROTECTIVE BARRIERS AGAINST CAPILLARY RISE FROM THE WATER TABLE AND AGAINST INDIRECT SEEPAGE RESULTING FROM THE PRESENCE OF A POROUS SUB-BASE. (3) TO OBSERVE THE MOISTURE CONTENT RESULTING FROM THE EFFECTS OF FREEZING AND THAWING, AND TEMPERATURES IN THE SUBGRADE OF AN EXPERIMENTAL ROAD AT THE " INSTITUT ROYAL METEOROLOGIQUE DE BELGIQUE ".
