摘要: Mr Berry died on 7 April at his home, surrounded by his family. At his own request, he continued working at the DfT as long as he could after being diagnosed with incurable cancer last year. He was born on 11 November 1972, and worked at the department for 31 years, having started as a messenger in ministers' offices. In 2014, he was awarded an OBE for services to local highways, innovation and resilience. Mr Berry was at the forefront of the major improvements in asset management and resilience over the last 10 years and was hugely respected for his diligence, leadership and talent. Roads minister Baroness Vere wrote: 'I first met Steve within the first few days of my new role to brief me on the intricacies of roads funding and maintenance. I was starting from a pretty low base but he was kind, patient and unbelievably knowledgeable. Steve was an incredibly effective and hard-working civil servant, much admired and respected by all. It has been my pleasure to work with him since those early days, and he will be much missed by me and all his colleagues at the DfT.' Former DfT permanent secretary Sir Philip Rutnam described Mr Berry as 'a legend in the transport world, a brilliant link between central and local government, and personally [a] very kind man'.
