Asphalt is sometimes regarded as an environmentally unsound material, but this is a huge misconception. Asphalt is also frequently seen as a potential outlet for the addition of waste streams from other industries, such as plastic, old rubber tyres, sulphur, glass, and paper. There were even historical trials using animal incinerator ash in asphalt. Many of these concepts or additives are adopted and trialled but discarded following economic and holistic environmental analysis. The reality is that asphalt is the most recycled material in the world. In the UK today, all old roads are recycled into new roads at a rate of about six million tonnes per annum. The key to real sustainability, however, is to delay the point at which this recycling needs to take place. If we add 10% to the lifespan of an asphalt road, we remove one intervention or roadworks event across the service life of that asset. If a road only has to be recycled three times in its life cycle, instead of four or five times, this brings huge financial and environmental benefits. |
