Home of the heat has recently gone out of the debate around the use of recycled materials in asphalt but this long-running issue is no less vital for that. The Use of Waste-derived Materials in Road Construction, produced for the SRRB by Winter Associates Limited and Coopland Consultancy Limited, may be something of a sleeping giant on this issue. It might not re-ignite the full fervour of the debate but it has the power to shape the conversation for years to come. The headline announcement is that: 'Based on the evidence currently available there is, as yet, no viable technical, environmental or economic case for the use (addition or replacement) of waste derived glass or plastic in asphalt.' Despite marginal pros and cons, glass is really dismissed immediately because the industry itself already has a closed-loop of recycling: 'The use of glass cullet in asphalt is referred to as down-cycling within the UK glass industry that champions closed-loop recycling and there is no reason why glass cannot be recycled 100% and in perpetuity.' In its second key recommendation, the report concedes that 'while the research is further advanced for waste-derived rubber (addition or replacement) than for plastic, the available technical and environmental case for its use in asphalt does not yet fully-support its use'. |
