In July, the Government-owned company is due to lift giant bridge beams into place across the M6 using a 50m-high crane as part of the transformation of Junction 10. The specialist crane is lined up to put in place the 44m-long steel beams, each weighing 130 tonnes, which will help form two new bridges over the junction. With a team of around 50 workers set to be involved in the work on the north bridge, Highways England said both carriageways of the motorway would be closed while the work takes place at the junction to ensure the safety of workers and road users. In addition, it said, a newly-introduced innovation - a 'large, bright and very visible' inflatable safety barrier - would be used to protect workers. The new Vehicle Incursion Airbag is being trialled in the Midlands in a bid to reduce the number of motorists who mistakenly drive into work areas, putting themselves and road workers at risk. |
